Bocconcini
Over the weekend I had some free time solo in Daylesford, so wandered the streets to find somewhere for brunch.
After studying some menus I decided on Bocconcini and sheepishly requested a table for one (note: I have no issue eating alone, but always feel guilty taking up a table that would normally service two), but the man who greeted me was more than lovely and seated me on a bench seat for me to peruse the menu further.
I ordered my usual soy latte - large. It was delicious and smooth and creamy, not bitter. Just how I like it.
I am partial to a corn fritter, so ordered the Sweetcorn Fritters. I really enjoyed these. They were fluffy and tasty, and the capsicum relish was the perfect balance of flavours. My only criticism would be that the menu said they were corn and halloumi fritters, however I could not taste any halloumi.
I finished brunch with a second coffee and enjoyed a bit of time reading my book, and never once felt like a burden being a solo diner.
Food: 8/10
Value: 7/10
Would I return: if I was a local this seems like the place that could be my regular, however there are a tonne more places I would try in Daylesford if I go back.

Active Health Box
I'm not a fan of the monthly subscription boxes, as I end up with a bunch of obscure products I never use. However, I happened to stumble across an instagram picture of the Active Health Box and saw that the January box came with a Lorna Jane 2015 diary.
As a bit of a back story, I had the Lorna Jane diary last year, and was keen to get it again this year. My friend said she got one for $25 from her local store, so in I went to my local, only to be told that she was a part of a flash sale and they had now returned to full price.
Well, I wasn't keen on paying $40 for a diary when I could have got it for $25, especially as we were already a week into the new year. The kind sales assistant told me that if I waited it out, they will more than likely come down again as it was already 2015; so with that goal in mind I thanked her and left the store.
So when I saw the Active Health Box for $25 I immediately jumped on it, scoring my $25 diary I was planning on buying anyway, making the rest bonus freebies!
Better still, Active Health Box isn't a 'subscription' like the others. You can buy boxes only if you want them (i think a few weeks into the month they reveal what's in that months box, so you can pre-order as a surprise, or jump on it once you know you're getting things you like).
I'm not too fussed on the rest:
12 Health Vanilla Protein Pancake Mix: I might like this, although it says it only makes 3 pancakes, which is hardly worth the effort! If these a good I might buy them again
Your Tea Skin Magic Tea: I have so much tea at home (that sits unused), and I'm not sure I believe a tea will clear my skin. Might give it a crack consistently, who knows, it might surprise me
Hello Hair Hydrating Mask: This is one use which is perfect for me because I know if I bought this kind of thing I would only remember to use it once. My hair's not super dry, but I will give this a go and see if I notice a difference
Welle Co Super Elixir: This intrigues me. I have read about these green super food things before and wanted to try one. My only complaint with this one is the booklet says you will notice a difference after 7 consistent days of using, but are only given one days worth. I would probably like to try 7 days worth to see if it works/makes me feel better to decide if it's worth purchasing
I will be sure to write about any of these if I remember to try them. I really only wanted the diary, so I'm already a happy camper.

The Imitation Game
I'll preface this by saying I am not a movie reviewer in any way shape or form - clearly.
We saw The Imitation Game last night, and I really enjoyed it. I feel like I have been swamped with movies about world war 2 in recent times (does anyone else think Brad Pitt has typecast himself a bit maybe?) but this was a completely different angle, and based on a true story (which I had never heard about before).
Without giving it away, the story follows Alan Turing (played by the amazing Benedict Cumberbatch) through different stages in his life, the main part being where he is trying to crack the enigma used by the Germans to encrypt their messages in the war. It has a sad ending, and the fact that it is a true story makes it all the more tragic.
It was a nice change from the typical WW2 movie, and it was really interesting learning about different parts of history. This is definitely a movie I would recommend going and seeing.
I give it 4.5/5 stars

Bluebird Espresso

I decided to tick the first breakfast off the '30 Breakfasts You Should Eave Eaten if You Live in Melbourne' list and meet some friends at Bluebird Espresso in Collingwood.
I picked this place as after an initial look through the list, this cafe appeared to have the most normal sounding breakfast menu - suiting our even more boring than us partners who were in tow.
We arrived just before 10 and secured a table for 4 out in the back courtyard - not bad for a Sunday morning (it was quite busy with people waiting for tables when we were leaving).
We started with coffees and I ordered my usual soy latte - a bit on the exxy side at $5.50, although to be fair I ordered a large; drinkable, but not the greatest. I might be out of touch, but I thought this was very expensive for a coffee.
As my friend was ordering the smashed avocado (as per the 'urban list' list) I decided to order the baked eggs as I often can't go past these if they are on the menu.
I didn't get a photo of the smashed avocado, but they did look amazing, so you will just have to imagine what they looked like. My friends verdict was that they were very good - better than Combi (which I will write about another time). Although these are a bit on the expensive side at $16 (plus everyone I saw was getting extras, either poached eggs or bacon, making it come in at a $20 breakfast).

My baked eggs were enjoyable, if not a little on the bland side. They came with a generous serving of sourdough which filled me up, however I felt that the amount of tomato sauce in the baked eggs was a bit lacking. I think these were reasonable value at around $15.
My friends partner ordered the pulled pork roll which I had a bit of food envy over. I didn't get to try it, but it looked good and had a generous amount of filling From memory this cost around $15.
All in all we had a pleasant experience, although it was on the expensive side coming in at just over $100 for four people ordering one breakfast and one tea or coffee.
Food: 7.5/10
Value: 6/10
Would I return? Not unless I was in the area, or someone wanted to go there. Too many other places that do better for less.

30 Breakfasts You Should Have Eaten if You Live in Melbourne
A friend posted a link to this article on Urban List the other day, and after a read through I quickly discovered I had only been to one of the places mentioned. Given that breakfast/brunch is my most favourite meal to eat out for, I was shocked, and immediately decided to make sure I visited every place on the list.
List can be found here.
Follow me on my journey trying all these supposedly good breakfasts. I may not eat/order the breakfast specifically referenced in the article (as I don't dig a lot of the dishes mentioned) but I thought this would be a good starting point for trying new breakfast places.

Token first post
Welcome to my new blog!
As you may have guessed, this is NOT a foodie blog, so if you're after in depth reviews of fine dining restaurants, you've come to the wrong place.
I have an appreciation of food that extends a little past the 'food = fuel' mantra, but I don't have a very refined palate, and I have quite a few foods that fall into the do-not-eat category. Not to mention my very limited vocabulary (and budget for that matter!), so I felt that this automatically ruled me out of the foodie status.
I decided to make this blog as I'm always looking for new places to eat, and I feel like it's hard to get reviews or even suggestions on places that may be a little less fancy. I live in Melbourne, love to travel (but don't do very much of it at the moment) and mostly cook at home, so I may also write about what I'm currently cooking/eating too.
But I'm thinking to tie in with the name, I might even write about things that have nothing to do with food. After all, this is not meant to be a foodie blog.
I plan to write about our new townhouse we've purchased, including any interior design stuff relating to that (I have a soft spot for all things interiors); my new health and fitness regime (because that hasn't been overdone either!); maybe track my professional life including my new studies I'm starting in March; as well as a wedding log given I've now been engaged for 2 years, with next year looking like it might finally be the year!
So hopefully I can keep up with this thing and really keep track of the year ahead. I hope you enjoy reading.
